Better to get on the horn as soon as you see them, rather than use high beam        

If they are going to spook, do it before they are within range to hit you.
As soon as you see one, just hit the horn, while slowing down.

And always come to a complete stop before you are alongside them, if they are still in the middle of the road.
You had one that decided to return where it came from, and when it finally made that decision, you were between it and where it wanted to be.

Just be grateful it wasn't a huge buck, and rutting season.
