visual fuse inspection is useful only if the fuse opened due to over current. Visual inspection won't reveal age cracks , even a meter may not identify a his line fuse crack, they're tough to find. But the fuse is simple (and cheap) enough to swap out just to ensure it's ok.
If things went completely dead and have stayed that way the issue should be fairly easy to find. The first check I'd make is to ensure the battery terminals are tight.
