Subject: VW air filter: Re-jet? |
|
When you installed the Volkswagen air cleaner, did you re-jet the carburetors or just say to hell with it? I have a KZ250 and a '62/'68 Baja Beetle and I recognized that filter right away- Almost put one just like it on my Baja. The VW shop will sell me one SUPER cheap- cheap enough to justify a re-jet on the KZ. Any tech on the swap is appreciated- |

the stock tank has a hose coming out of the bottom... does this copper tank work just the same, even without the bottom hose, and just one on top? Thank you! Awesome bike by the way!!! |

That "street fighter" is a motard so that's a fender out front with an integrated headlight. |

What's the triangular thing on the front of the white, dirt bike lookin SF? That is about one of the best lookin ones I have ever seen...except for the all black one in the FAQ section. |

How loud do you think those exhaust pipes are? They look very, very sleek. I would love something that low-key. |

I especially love the way the tank is done.
Always felt the streetfighters looked incomplete (I guess that's the idea) without something covering up the weird tank lines.
I also love white bikes.
AND, it has enough red to make it fast.

I still want this...
I rode my bike with NO plastics on it after doing a bunch of maintenance one day.
It really felt like a completely different bike and it was wonderful. |

It's the minimalistic look/feel when you're riding a streetfighter. I like the fact that it becomes more of a machine to me rather than a motorcycle (it makes sense in my head ).
Others are just cheap and don't want to replace plastics... |

Reminds me of my fighter beginings.
A few thoughts for you if you're interested.
Fender: If you want a slimmer fender just look into cutting down your stock one. A coping saw and files/sandpaper will get you about anywhere you want to go.
A easy way to dress up the sides of the tank and add "wings" like Brian suggested is to just cut out part of your stock fairings. I've seen it done and wished I'd thought of it first.
For clipons/tank clearance, just weld a couple bolts onto the neck of the bike to be new steering stops, that'll keep your bars from hitting the tank. Clipons will decrease your steering radius, but only "limit" you at times like turning the bike around in tight spaces.
I love what you did with the air filter, how has it run for you?
And your Photoshop is almost identical to the one I just recently conjured up myself, I think I may head down that road eventually too.

I know, you're probably already done with this, but here are my thoughts...
All that space under the seat -- make it an extra-capacity fuel tank! Hugger on the rear tire, put a couple extra gallons under the seat (low-to-the-ground weight), and you've got a cross-country traveler. One fuel stop per state!
Anyway, it looks great. I've been thinking of a project like this, and seeing others do the same just makes me want to start today... |

Thanks! I'm going to straighten out the bends in that back of the tail after I relocate everything.
Here is a rough(very) MSpaint chop of what I'm going for.
And my inspiration

Wow this is really cool. Great looking reservoir. That pan worked surprisingly well. There's so much space under the seat and tail. Are you going to chop the end of the tail when you move that part of the frame? I like the look of an exposed rear tire. I'm trying to find a cheap 250 so I can do this to it. I don't want to take apart my 07. Good luck and I'd like to see some updates when you get more done. |

I'm thinking something maybe like an SV650 looking front fender. With the cowl, I tried to keep about the same angle of the top of the gas tank, but it bowed up a bit after it was screwed into the seat pan. I think part of the problem is that it flares out towards the end, rather than coming more to a point. My battery randomly died this week, so I just bought a new X5L-BS, same as stock but 1" shorter. It only poked through the seat pan about an inch, so maybe I'll play around with the height and angle of it.
For the tank I have a few ideas. One is puting in some cutouts for clipons, and seeing how the lower section pans out. The other is roughing the tank into a smaller size and making a whole fiberglass cover to give it a new shape. And last is finding another tank that doesn't fit too badly. |

The front end looks... odd. I'm talking about the space between the tire and the bottom triple. Some sort of fender, though minimal, would break up that starkness. And yeah, not a fan of the tail cowl. Looks like it is only the size it is for the battery (is that right?) I understand it was quick and out of a trash can, but maybe look into a physically smaller battery, a super capacitor, etc... depending on your starting needs. It'd sure cut Weight as well as bulk.
But yeah, I like it and where you're headed. Any plans to fill in the tank recess or create abs/fiberglass "wings" that screw in place? I've seen some Really nice wings before that made for a good place to mount turn signals and were still very minimalist.

Thanks for all the encouragement guys! Instills more confidence that I'm not just devaluing my bike.
Here is a mockup of the new frame line.
I'm not going to be using the stock headlight and gauges. Just there because my ninja is my only transportation. I'm thinking of getting a single bi-xenon HID projector for the headlight, maybe two ala Ducati 999?
Next bit of money is going towards Gold Valves, Sonic Springs, zx600 shock, and shorter dogbones. |

Though notable changes will be using a capacitor for bike running instead of a battery, and no huge tail cowling. I also won't use the OEM headlight or gauges (at least in a finished product). And you may not either in your final rendition.
All in all, it looks good to me. Also looking forward to daylight shots, and the change of the lower frame member (which I expect to clean up the profile even more).

I like it. Some daylight shots would be cool.
Over all it's clean and with some "refinement" could be really cool! |

Subject: Pics of my streetfighter/cafe racer WIP (dial up users be warned) |
|
First off, I know there is a streetfighter section, but it doesn't seem very lively lately, so my apologies if I offend any mods.
Here is my progress on my bike from the last few weeks:
When I bought it
And now...
My temporary Rear Cowl made from a section of trash can.
I chopped the seat short and screwed the cowl onto the seat pan, so it comes off with the seat.
I relocated all the electronics into a pan that fits under the seat.
And I relocated the batter to the tail under the cowl. I had to cut a hole in the seat pan.
Bottom view of my battery tray.
I made some plates and clamps to mount the stock headlight and gauges on the forks.
I made a new overflow reservoir out of some copper tubing and caps.
One tube is the vent, the other goes down to siphon up the coolant.
Simple clamp
I had an air filter for a VW Beetle lying around, so I made a new filter.
I made some templates from the original airbox and fitted the original boots into it. Two Hose clamps holds it nice and tight.
I cut off the superfluous mounting brackets and next I'm going to re direct the lower member of the subframe to come up just before the start of the cowl. For the cowl, I'm going to be making something a bit nicer once I get some time and fiberglass. The straight headers are temporary as well, I'm hoping to find a tubing bender and fab up and under-tail system with all that extra room. Also, will be getting some Clip-ons and rear sets from Woodcraft.
So far almost everything has been Zero-dollar, mostly stuff I had in the garage. With the price of copper what it is, the reservoir ended up around $20, and a remnant of fabric at Wal-Mart was $2.
What do you guys think? |
