 Subject: NYC Motorcycle Adjustment Weekend.

If there is anyone in NYC who needs valve adjustments, oil changes, or just wants there bike checked over by a somewhat competent home mechanic, this is the weekend to do it.

I have to Adjust the valves, change the oil and oil filter, wash and re-oil the air filter, lube the axleshafts, and hopefully, if my tire changing equipment arrives, change the rear tire (waiting on a new front wheel, compliments of Leon, mine got messed up due to bad NYC streets).

If you would like some work done, or your bike looked over, post on here, and say when is best for you. Nothing after 2pm on either Sat or Sunday. I have to get some sleep for work each night.

I also have Monday's and Tuesdays off, if that is better for anyone else.

Oh, and expect to learn how to strip and check your bike. And bring your tool kit that came with the bike. No money needed except for any parts (oil, filters, spark plugs).

Maybe a bit of a ride afterwards.

Ian.

 Subject: I should be, but I can't

My Aunt passed away the other night, and her funeral in on Monday. I can't take the time off to attend it.
If it was on Tuesday, then it wouldn't be a problem getting there. I have quite a bit of Family that lives in the Hamilton area.

I've done it a couple of weeks ago it is not that hard if you don't rush yourself. The hardest part was to get out a screwdriver I dropped into the engine Smile

Wife decided to visit the in-laws this weekend, I'm not invited since she's going to stay for a week. I guess I'll deliver the wheel. Let me know who's going to be there when, I'll time the trip to match.

There is just something about doing something to the motor for myself the first time that always gives me the willies. I don't know why, I've never screwed up anything I tried to yet, but...

BTW, thanks for that post, I just realized I forgot to respond.

FWIW, I brought fishing line and tape for that exercise. I'm pretty paranoid. :)

I think I'm going to put off the adjustment until the bike is running really badly, though. At least then I'll know if I did it right or not. Smile

Wes

I'm in Kingston -- you should be able to remember that. :)

If you don't know where that is, take I-81 north, cross the border, hang a left and ride for 20 miles. That's 3 hours west of Montreal, two and a half east of Toronto, and two hours southeast of Ottawa, for those of you who still can't place it.

If you're ever planning on being in this neck of the woods, make sure you give me a dingle.

Sorry to hear about your Aunt. Hamilton is a nice enough city, it's about three and a half hours from here. If you ever go that way again, dropping by my house will probably cost you an hour or so on the trip. (It'd be fast, I expect, to go up via Buffala).

My bike had 9600 miles when I done the adjustment and 6 valves were tight (out of the spec). Only two inlet valves on 1 cylinder were loose (completelly on the loose side of the spec). Bike ran just fine BTW except that it couldn't idle when it is cold with no choke applied. And the adjustment didn't do much to that.

Another thing I found that spark plugs had different color (that was first time I took them out). One was rust-like color and another was black. If I understand it right black means it runs too rich. Am I right? I guess carb sycn/rejet is next thing I have to do.

Funny you should mention Kingston. I was looking at my road atlas after I asked that question of you and I noticed there was a Kingston, Ontario. How about that? Actually I was thinking of bringing you up an EK standard type chain. #520 with 106 links and a removable clip type master link sound about right? Would one or both of us owe a tax if an American gave a Canadian a chain? Do you have a birthday coming up soon? Labor Day? Early Xmas???

Hey Ian,

Wish I could make it, but weekends are tough for me, get most of my riding in during the week. Would be good to have someone who knows how the bike should run look it over. It runs much better than when I got it, but that's not saying much.

Met you at BK, on Merrick. I would like to come ride with you guys, but I’m not that fast, and don’t want to get over my head.

Actually, I have a birthday coming up September 16th.

That said, another board member has (very kindly) already offered me his spare stock chain (less one link -- I'll be adding a master link anyhow) with only ~1500 miles of use on it. You know who you are, thanks a billion.

Thanks very much for the offer though!

And of course, you are always welcome at Casa de Wes, I'll bet it would be fun to hit two Kingstons on a bike in one day. Several years ago, my dad flew from Kingston, Ontario to Kingston, Nova Scotia and on to Kingston, Jamaica -- coincidentally, all work-related. That's gotta be one for the record books. :)

Cheers,
Wes

 Subject: Plug color

Hey, that's WIERD. My plugs are *exactly* the same. Seriously!

I figured the rust colour was due to microscopically-sized rust particles bleeding off my tank, through the petcock filter, fuel filter, and jets, and being blasted up and melted onto the plug.

How the heck is YOURS getting there? Your tank shouldn't be rusty.

I've been thinking about doing a carb sync, but I was hoping I could get away without it for the winter. That said, a strong idle would be very helpful when the cold snap hits in a couple of months.. Hmm... Vinyl tubing and motor oil, huh? What can you break? :)

FWIW, I had my valves done at 6200 miles, 7 tight, one *just barely* within spec (tight side). I guess I flog my bike more than you do. Smile They were checked at 500, and were all within spec.

Actually, the rust (tan) like color is the one you want Plug color. That is why I am conserned with the black one. It shouldn't be this way. Man, I hate to touch my carburator. Wry

Oh, you meant tan-coloured, not rusty. Mine actually has tiny amounts of rust on the electrode; both cylinders are also showing carbon build-up.
