[9,000rpms in the background] "WHAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa - tsccccchhhhhhhh...Duke, I'm not ..... to make it to...tchhhhhhhhhhhh...too much time at....tscchhhhh... Pines.....2 hours....tschhhh....dropping Death...straight to...tschhhhhh", silence.

From what I gather he ate up too much time today somewhere, so he's heading straight to the checkpoint, skipping Death Valley. At first I thought he was saying a train held him up, but then I figured out he was talking about trying to find a tree? He also said something about only getting in 950 miles today but the extra yesterday keeps him on track and other riders will have the same difficulties.

Through the garbled mess that's the best interpretation I have. Cell phones are great ... just not out West in no-man's land.

An interesting note is that if you arrive at the scorers table at the check-in, but then have to go back to your bike to get something that affects your score, you are out of luck, they won't count it. It pays to be organized. It's easy to be organized when you're fresh, more difficult after a nice 36 hour ride. All part of the challenge, right Andrew?

Leg 2 bonuses available 11pm tonight PT. More to come later...

I hate for him to lose the miles and the points on the bonus, but was thinking that Death Valley in August would mean Leon's Starship would have to be christened the "Suicidal Insanity"
Sort of related:
For some reason, it appears that Mr. Higdon's reports aren't being posted on the ironbutt.com, but they are appearing on the team strange discussion boards. Since we are presently stck with our man in no phone land, I suggest that anyone who wants some more IBR fix check them out, he is a great choice for the official chronicler.

(probs with previous post)

Nothing like speed and sudden changes to make one appreciate life! And trees are good. Love trees.

I posted this below, but I'll report it here, cuz I think the new digest system may bury older posts in long articles.

I found this after a bit of surfing. from just prior to the start.

The Moron on the left is another Chatty Moron, Dale Horstman. Not riding the IBR, not working the rally (that I know of), just riding around and harassing the Morons who *are* in the rally. And probably Leon, too. (Dale is from Dale City, curiously enough, which is a stone's throw from Leon in the general DC metroplex.)

In my case, I took heaps and plenty of time getting my rally schtuff ready before facing a scorer. I usually arrived mid-to-late checkpoint window (never early), got marked as present, and put everything together. I wrote up my fuel logs at the checkpoints, so during the riding part all I had to do was write mileage on them and get moving again.

Never left anything on the bike, never failed to claim a bonus I meant to claim. I did ride right past a 4 point bonus in California late at night, but that was because I had changed my route shortly before leaving Checkpoint 1, so I didn't realize it was on my way. No big deal, but you see how things get missed in the blur of activity. All that time on a plan, then a California friend says "if I were riding, I'd head up 395, it moves along real good."

There was one bonus I had wanted to claim, but my gas receipt said "South Burlington" and not "Burlington," so I didn't get the points. I sort of held up the receipt limply and said, "I probably can't get points for this, but..." And lo, the scorer shook his head, "no."

I hear they are $35 a night in the resort. Gotta love some things about Vegas.

Hey, what's with that blue bungee that goes from between the seat and tank down around the motor on that pic? Is that to hold the whole works together? Wink
