Subject: IBR: Just talked to Leon in Missoula

I just spoke to Leon in Missoula. His phone battery quit on Monday and wouldn't hold a charge, he had it on AC power when I talked to him. He has no idea he'd done so well on this leg as only one one of eleven riders to get the big 5 bonus, and actually thought he'd fallen several spots due to missing a bonus in Philadelphia which he rode right past. He got 52,000 points for this leg. He said the last two days have been brutal. He thought check-in started at 10am so He arrived at 9:40. In reality check-in started at 8am and he would have been time - barred after 10am. He lost 1,000 points for being late. He said he really wished his phone would have been working so someone could have made sure he had his times correct. His chain is toast and he said he barely made it in as it was popping badly like it had a frozen section. Apparently his chain oiler was only getting to one side of the chain. It was a brand-new o-ring chain before the rally, but the stress this week took it's toll?

He did 11,300 miles total. Total points will be 69,500. Leaders will be somewhere around 90,000.

He seemed to be really happy and said he couldn't sleep, there was just too much excitement around. I tried to explain the eruption of wild fans following his epic adventure on the Net, as well as the fact he'd ben dubbed the 'animal'. In typical Leonesque he just said, "hmm...all I did was ride the rally".

He's going to call again tonight after the awards banquet when they announce the final standings.

I called Mike Norman from G-Force an hour or so ago and gave him the word. He was on the road, and said to pass back his congrats! He was very stoked...

I think Mike might want to take a peek at the motor Duke, to see what kind of wear it took. Give him a call sometime in the next few days.

I can't wait to see the final standings. This is so very cool. We'll be excited FOR Leon. ;)

We'd have to convince him to take that motor out of his bike. He really likes it!

So he finished -- Leon truly is a winner! This is an amazing accomplishment, he rides in 11 days what I ride in two years!

Both you and Leon really take the "bike as a platform for creation" idea to a new level. I still think mine is über k3wl because it has a few extra lights on board. Smile I wonder if this craze will ever catch on with Ninja 250s like it has with Choppers? That would be something, although I'd hope the crazy would lean heavily towards the form (vs. function) end of the spectrum.

I gotta get me that seat of his, though. I am *so* tired of my bony ass' ass bones poking my butt muscles from the inside. What's his address again? ;)

WOW. That was the least energetic he has looked in any picture. It's so good to hear that his chain of thought wasn't in as bad shape as his drive chain!
It has been a bummer of a day for me, not only did I break an irreplaceable tool (anyone know a lockshop going out of buisiness? This thing REALLY is indispensible) but after days of no 'net access at work, it gave up again right at my lunchtime.
Knowing Leon made it and seeing the picture proof made my evening.
Way to go Leon, and many thanks to Duke for the updates on his progress here on the board. My thanks to MIK for the ME photos as well.
Obviously, G-force deserves a big hand for the engine work they did too.
