Subject: I've just seen the worst oil filter in my life.

So a friend recently picked up a 2000 BMW 323i for pretty cheap, that had it's share of problems. Camshaft position sensor is borked, Hoses are leaky, crappy job debadging- Overall evidence that before it went up for auction, it was owned by a wanna-be boy racer. We set to work on everything, trying to get all of the dash lights to shut up.

So we go and get a new filter, and pull off the cover. If you don't know anything about an E46 BMW, they don't use the screw-in oil filters, rather just the medium types. Anyways- so we go to pull it out, and realize the cap is giving us some trouble. With some fenagling, it finally pops off, and we find the most horrific sight.

It appears whoever owned this car, didn't realize that you needed to, i don't know, CHANGE THE OIL FILTER. I won't pretend i've seen it all, but i've seen my share of oil filters, and this one has definitely taken the cake!

Seems it had melted or... i guess, disintegrated against the plastic cover and baked itself in, while other pieces went into the filter. Overall, we were all pretty appalled by it. It has almost 130,000 miles on it, so it's seen some action. From the Carfax report, it was a business fleet vehicle, then was bought by someone in GA who put 100,000 on it, then sold to some local guy who wrecked it, and then where we got it from "restored" it for auction.
