It all depends how serious you are about doing maintanace

Yes, you can brake things, so what? There is always another solution to a problem. Like in your case, you could buy a spare engine of eBay and fix your original later. If only one mistake makes you to sell the bike... oh well, you are not serious about the whole motorcycling thing then :-)

For me, I'd rather do everything myself, so I know what and how was done to the bike. My safety depends on it. If I bring it to a shop, I waste time/money and I am still not sure if they done what they said.
