First Bike: Ninja 250 or 500?... New or Used?

I will be getting my first bike within the next month or so. I just got my motorcycle endorsment, and been riding a few times before, but I am still very much a beginner. My question is... Should I go with a 250 or 500? If I go with the 250 I was thinking brand new. If I go with the 500 I was thinking of used (2000/2001ish). I want something I will eventually be able to take on a 200 mile round trip that still has enough power that I would not get run over by faster traffic.

Any Suggestions?
