I put the cheapest gas I can find in my bikes, and cars, and generator, and lawnmower... I've never found the cheapest gas a Shell or Chevron unless it is the only station for miles around. ;-)
I suspect that you are just noticing the difference because this is the time of year that everyone switches from "winter" gas to "summer" gas. My car always runs like crap for a few weeks in the spring and fall during this transition.
