Re: Some info from Shell's own website on high octane fuel

Again.. a lot of anger over $.70.... It's not about who is RIGHT or WRONG. If you feel you need to use it then USE IT and don't worry about it...
Remember the Octane rating is just a anti-knock rating. The higher the number the more resistant to knock (detenation) the fuel is. If you have no need to use it DON'T... if you do... DO!!!
My friend has a turbo'd Miata.. He HAS TO RUN 93, or at normal boost (12PSI) it will knock, at 15 PSI he needs 108 (race gas) to be able to run the ignition timing more advanced for full power potential at the track or KNOCK BIG TIME.
If you have a high compression engine, or you are boosted, or using NOS, Or perhaps there is some carbon buildup on the tops of the pistons creating a hot spot, or perhaps some poor casting marks on the combustion chamber causing a hot spot. Your engine may knock with 87 and another 250 Ninja same year same engine won't knock...
I have this trouble with my Miata.. I SHOULD be able to use 87 with the 12deg timing I run.. but for some reason it pings bad in hotter weather... so I USE 92 or higher.. I don't know why it does it.. but it DOES.... so I spend $5 a week extra...

As I said.... use what you like.. and what works for you... and forget about the cost.

Ken
