Re: New or slightly used?

Ugh.

Let me make this perfectly clear:

If you follow the break in procedure on the NInja 250 according to the sticker that is stuck on the Tachometer, you are going to wind up with an engine that burn oil (because the piston rings never got seated properly), and will not make nearly as much power as it should.

Now, you don't need to go out and beat the snot out of the bike for it's first 500 miles, but you DEFINATELY should not stick to the 4k/6k rpms limits. Those are nonsense, and its been proven time and time again by various bikes on this forum over the past 5 years I've been paying attention.

What you should do is during the first 100 miles, is ride the bike like a normal person, with your upper rpm target being 7k rpms. Ride it gently until the temp gauge is in the normal zone. DON'T let it idle for longer than a street light sequence, or warm it up with the choke for more than 15 seconds.

When the engine is fully warmed up, perform AT LEAST 5 roll on runs (full throttle is OK) from 3000 rpms up to 8000 rpms. Don't ride it hard, and put it away hot. Give it a nice easy cool down ride around you block a time or two. Let it cool down COMPLETELY before your next ride.

Once you've passed the 100 mile mark, you can now set your rpm limit to 9500 rpms.
Be gentle when you start it up until it's in the normal temp range.
No excessive idling, or use of the choke.
Again, 5 full throttle runs per ride from 3000 rpms to 10500 rpms. Doesn't really matter what gear you're in when you do this, you are just doing this to seat the rings properly.
Try not to get pulled over for speeding if you choose to do this in 6th gear. Wink

Once you hit the 250 mile mark, change the oil and filter.
I would probably also recommend that you have someone inspect the valve clearances if you can't do it your self.

Then ride the bike like you normally will over the next 35k miles, making sure you change the oil and filter every 3-6k miles, adjusting the valves every 6k miles, adjusting and lubing the rear chain every 600 miles, plus changing the spark plugs and cleaning the air filter every 12k miles.

That's the best possible break in you can give a Ninja 250 motor.
Ian.
