Financial question re: new vs used

First, I would like to thank everyone for a well designed informative site. After thinking about it for years I am finally taking the MSF course in September. I originally thought about buying a co-worker's FZ6 but after reading the information here and at other sites I am definitely buying something smaller most likely a Ninja 250.

I had to laugh when I read "Why Sport Bikes are not beginners bikes." Everything in the article my friends have said. I have a quick question regarding new vs used. I have read the information here and elsewhere and most people say to buy a used bike first because of price and the fact that a new rider is likely to dump the bike at some point.

But, the late model, low mileage bikes here are going for 2700-2800 (I used the price calculator and that seemed about right) a new one is 2999 msrp. I know there are taxes and tags, but in my state you have to pay taxes and tags on a used one too. There may be some dealer prep, transportation charges etc. on a new bike but I would be paying a qualified mechanic to check a used bike.

As far as laying the bike down I would be sad if it was brand new or like new. I spoke to a salesman at the closest dealer and told him I would not pay more than msrp and he said that wouldn't be a problem and even indicated they might negotiate. I notice in the poll that slightly more than half the members bought new.

So it seems Ninjas don't depreciate very fast which is good but am I missing something?

Thanks again
