post 1: Ducati 748 blows engine & shuts down the track for an hour

A few laps into session one of Street A, a red Ducati 748 coming out of turn 9 was blowing smoke and began dripping Halfway down the straightaway, the turn 10 corner work had the equipment failure flag out, but it was too late. The smoke was now so thick that you couldn't see from turn 9 to turn 10. The Ducati then dumped a 3-4 foot wide by 30+ foot long oil slick. Shortly afterward, The cycle careened off the track to the right and into the tire wall. The rider flew off to the left and tumbled on the asphalt into turn 10.

The rider, then quickly got up and ran off the track to avoid any possible cycles coming thru the turn. There were two cycles behind, both 100+ meters back. They both went left of track and missed the oil slick.

The emergency vehicles came flying from the infield onto the track, with cycles on the track slowing down and trying to avoid the oil slick and the emergency vehicles.

The rider had lifted up his cycle and was looking over the front suspension.

One of the emergency workers ran out to the major oil slick and waved all the riders off the track (there was also minor oil drips all the way back to the exit of turn 9, luckily no one went down on these drips).

Once all the cycles were off the track, the personnel worked to get the oil up.

This goober decided to tour the track on his bicycle.

Track workers spent an hour cleaning up the oil. I was glad our group had another group before us to go out and test the effectiveness of the clean-up.

After the wreck, I went and spoke to the rider and looked at his Duc. He was unhurt and in good spirits.

The Duc survived well with just minor scraping to the fairings. Oh yea, it had a blown engine, too...
