Aftermarkets are supposed to be louder than stock, or am I wrong?

I thought "louder" was a main reason to change to an aftermarket exhaust, (hear more muffler compared to the quiet stock) beyond a mostly undetectable (while riding) fraction more HP and being reasonably lighter.

If I had them, I'd just pretend I was riding a cruiser with loud pipes, which is more expected on a cruiser (Harley for example), so if anybody looked at me angrily, I wouldn't feel bad, "it's the bike, not me". The extra noise might actually help in situations where visual information is ignored by careless cagers. They hear something loud on their side and that might make them look. Just ideas.
