Responsible use is the key...

I can tell you from personal experience that using Helmet speakers and 32db earplugs in downtown DC, I was the FIRST person to be looking around when emergency service (ambulance/fire) sirens started to go off. Cars are more insulating than both of those combined.

BUT, I'm an odd duck in that I do not listen to lyrics. I listen to the music. It's very easy for me to tune out the music and hear Past it to the more important things. Up to and including the screech of sliding tires.... Not everyone can do this, but it's easy to test. If you can go ride with music and find it not distracting/tune it out when you have to give more attention to something else (series of corners?), then you may be fine. If it consumes your attention trying to hear the Lyrics, then it is most likely Not the right choice for you.
