(R+M)/2

The formula on US pumps is (R+M)/2 That the Research Octane number plus the Motor Octane Number divided by 2. Essentially, it is the average of the 2 methods of "valuating" octane.

Octane is just a fuel's resistance to detonation and pre-ignition. Here's some light reading
