Racing tuck yields big increase in MPG: 42 -> 51

Hi Guys, thanks for such a great site/forum. This is not really new information, just a confirmation of things people have already mentioned.

I was getting 42 mpg or less commuting to work and back. I started using a more aerodynamic position, basically tucking in behind the wind screen. I rest my forearms on my thighs. You immediately notice the wind noise is reduced, and the bike goes faster withe the same throttle position. So you close the throttle to maintain the same speed and ... you save gas. Using the "racing tuck" my MPG went up to 51-52. That's a pretty big difference for only a riding position change.

I weigh 235 lbs, and I almost always have tennis rackets in a backpack strapped to my back. I'm sure that doesn't help the aerodynamics. I'm also waiting on some 15/42 gears to arrive. I've got 860 miles on the bike so far, so it should be mostly broken in. The new position is a good back stretch after tennis.
