And yes, it takes some work to find the right pair. Thankfully, http://earplugstore.stores.yahoo.net/ has sample packs, one of which is aimed at those with smaller ear canals. Even my wife, who used to wear Kids ear plugs, was able to find something that was comfortable and fit correctly. Don't use them and it's not an "if" but a "when" you lose your hearing to a point where you're sorry.
Past that, the best way to fix the wind noise is to get rid of the fairing. It is Drastically quieter riding a naked bike than riding one with a fairing. There's more wind hitting you, but far less turbulence and thus less noise. No screen, no matter how big, has ever proven to be as quiet as riding a naked bike in my experiences.
