I have a shuffle again (left the first in a rental car and then destroyed a nano in a bicycle crash) and use Skull Candy earbuds that cancel a good deal of noise. I usually run the cords inside my jacket and/or shirt and clip the ipod to the bottom of my jacket.
On long rides I try to mix up music and regular earplugs. I still think that good earplugs block out more noise and provide a more peaceful ride. Sometimes I want to bump, though.
