Earbuds vs helmet speaker opinions

Hi everyone! I know this has been discussed before, but I'm just curious about fresh thoughts on the issue.

Like many of you, I enjoy music while riding. I've been trying two different strategies for hearing my music. Those squishy earbuds (that cancel some noise too) are pretty nice at first, but after some time, my ears get sore. I tore apart some old headphones, and put those speakers in my helmet, kinda behind the cheekpads. Those provided more "ambient" sounding sound. Plus, I could more easily hear other stuff around me. But I have to have the volume much higher to hear clearly. I'm worried that may be bad for my ears in the long run.

Just curious about what you guys do/prefer.
