Why does my 4.9 gal tank not hold 4.9 gal (kinda)

As a sequel to my post "Real World City MPG - http://forums.ninja250.org/viewtopic.php?t=75439".. I hit the magic number today.. 110 miles... the bike started to sputter and then stalled.. I was at a stop sign on a side street near my house.. no biggie.. I kicked it to reserve.. it started.. then I put it back to "ON" and drove it home without issue...

If you remember last time I filled it up at 135 miles and it took 2.6 gallons to fill (on the side stand up to the filler neck). OK.. so 1352.6= approx 52mpg.. not bad.. BUT.. why does it want to die at half a tank?

As suggested in the other thread.. I pulled the tank, rolled it on its side and removed the petcock.. the filters on it looked okay, but nonetheless I sprayed them with Gumout and reinstalled.. and here I am again..

I will more than likely:

-pick up a 5gal gas can..
-pull the tank, remove petcock and drain the fuel into that can checking for anything that might block the petcock..
-reinstall petcock
-refuel and ride

Anything else that I am missing here? Could the petcock be the source of my trouble? Besides that and the tank itself, there really isnt anything else left that would cause this.. and the vent hose is not kinked or squished.. I check it every time I pull the seat off.
Weird that moving from reserve to on would make such a difference.. any help or guidance appreciated..

Adam
