I have been commuting on my Ninja since early June, been getting well over 70 mpg:

I usually shift around 7-8000 rpm, avoid highway riding most of the time, tires at 40 psi., chain is well lubed every week. I weight about 160 lb. with all my riding gear, including helmet. I use bugy cords to strap a milk crate on the back to carry my bookbag and other misc. items.

My commute 3 times a week is 96 miles/day, add more miles if I ride around for errans.
