Forget Speakers

Forget speakers on a bike, especially a sports bike. With the helmet on you'll never hear them above the wind noise and even if you have a 100W amp they'll just sound like crap theough the helmet, plus they'll annoy the hell out of anyone within a few hundred yards of you.

Maybe at low speed on a cruiser with a giant windshield speakers are semi-practical.

An iPod and earbuds or small speakers in your helmet is by far the best way to go. You can get helmet speakers from any of the communications equipment makers or you can just glue some small headphone earpieces in there. I actually did that myself so that I can listen to my GPS instructions rather than try to read the screen while I'm riding.

Personally I find any sort of distraction (music in my ears, a GPS in front of my eyes) to be a safety compromise. You need all your wits about you on a bike. Distractions can be lethal. However, each to his own. If you really need music, an iPod and helmet speakers is probably the way to go. Assuming you don't wear earplugs (which would sort of defeat the purpose), having the music loud enough to be heard properly over the wind noise at speed will likely eventually damage your hearing. Hell, the wind noise alone will damage your hearing if you expose yourself to it long enough.

If you must have music while you travel, I'd get a car.
