octane vs. useless crap....

Most of you know that I've modified my EX-250 with fuel injection. A few months ago I had an unexpected experience with no-ethanol gasoline.

A friend on my street told me that small independent gas station near our neighborhood sells no-ethanol gasoline, so the next time I needed to fill up the EX-250 I stopped there. Because I was doing some testing/tuning on the bike I was running the bike's FI system in a "no correction" mode, meaning that the ECU wasn't set to react to the feedback from the O2 sensor and make on-the-fly corrections to the air/fuel mixture.

When I rode to the gas station the air/fuel ratio meter I have installed on the bike's instrument panel was showing normal, desirable ratios, like 14.5 at idle and 13.5 under acceleration. After I filled it up with no-ethanol gasoline and rode it far enough for it to make it through the fuel system to the injectors, the bike began to run very rich. I had to stop and connect my laptop computer to change the setting in the FI system that allows the ECU to auto-correct to the O2 sensor.

The ethanol mixed gasoline is truly crappy compared to 100% petroleum product.
