No side fairings okay?

So I recently converted my bike to a street fighter and one of my more mechanically inclined friend said that I can't leave the side fairings off (ones by the seat) because it's too risky with the ecu and fuse box and people will f with it. I have seen a lot of pictures with bikes like this and love the look on my bike with the sides off. Does anyone have any insight, advice, explanations, or ways to keep them off safely to provide to me? I don't ride in te rain (on purpose) ever since my crash and keep the bike covered at home but not at work/school. Thank you all for your help and ride safe.
