mind-empty is good

I try to cultivate that mind-empty state when I'm riding. It seems to me the less mind-empty you are, the more distracted you are from the road and what's going on there.

I was conscious of this recently when I was riding on a country road with a car following not far behind me. I discovered my attention was centered -- or at least distracted -- by the guy behind me. I was looking up the road but my mind was on him. I had to make a concerted effort to bring most of my focus back onto the road in front.

I ride better and safer when my attention is centered that way.

As to deserving luck... I get frustrated with myself when I do wifty things. I try to keep in mind that not being hurt (and my bike being okay) was wonderful but basically not the point. The point is to avoid getting myself into such situations.
