If you are not feeling confident, I'd suggest taking a MSF course. It's been a while since you rode, and a refresher wouldn't hurt.
Also check the age of the tires. #1 safety item in my mind. Plenty of older Ninjas have out-dated (sometimes original!) tires on them. While they look ok - they aren't.
The tire's date of manufacture is on the sidewall in an oval like "2609". The first 2 digits are the week of they year (26th week), the last are the last 2 digits of the year (2009). Anything past 4 or 5 years is due for a replacement.
