Re: Buy new or used for beginner?

Everybody told me the same things, and I'm glad I listened. I dropped my bike pushing it, and have almost dropped it hitting the brakes on slow corners. The manager of the parts department at the local Kawi dealer went so far as to say that if he bought a new bike for his kid, he'd consider taking the kid out and making him drop it in the driveway, because it's going to happen eventually anyway, and once it does (in his opinion) you're less worried about it and can relax and ride more effectively.

My '92 w/ 22,600 mi in excellent shape with Muzzy exhaust, tank bag, swingarm stand, and jet kit (uninstalled) (= lots of extras) was $1700 in the SF Bay Area (which I'm guessing has generally higher prices than many other places).

To get those extras w/ a new bike I'm guessing would be at least $400, so let's say my bike cost me $1300 normalized. That's at least $1700 less than what I'd pay at the dealer. I could think of many things to spend that $1700 on besides a warranty...

Another reason to buy used is b/c your first bike may not be your last, so if you're going to upgrade, then why pay the "new bike" tax (new bikes / automobiles loose a chunk of their value as soon as you exit the dealer's lot.)

So that's my $.02
