Helmet replacement time....

I've read over and over how helmets should be replaced "regularly" with that word having different meanings for different people. What I do not recall was reading the why. I certainly may have at some point, I just don't remember. So I reached out to my friends over at Scorpion helmets, who gave me the following reply:

Quote:
Thank you for contacting Scorpion USA. We recommend changing helmets every 3-5 years depending on how often you use the helmet. The EPS foam deteriorates over time from sweats and environmental debris.

OK, fair enough, but is there a visible way to tell if the liner has deteriorated?

Quote:
EPS foam deterioration cannot be determined by physical inspection.

Ah poop. So here I am now, with 2 helmets that are each more than 5 years old, and probably need to be replaced. I know, #firstworldproblems for sure, right?

THis leads me to the question of how many of you actually follow the "guidelines" and replace your helmet/helmets before you destroy it/them via crash?
