Subject: Here's what I've done |
|
Although it's all in various threads...
1989 Chassis, original engine with about 6k on the clock
Swapped out the electrical system from an 04
Stripped all the unnecessary wiring from the harness (horn, accessory leads, signal light wires, headlight wires, tail light wires, etc.) and left it "unwrapped"
Swapped in an 06 stator cover (the original had a "crackle" finish that I disliked)
EX500 clutch and brake levers
K&N pod filter, rejetted with Keihin jets, cause fuck DynoJet (cost me less than $15 and only took 2 tries to get it right)
Muzzy 2:1 stainless round exhaust, chopped down
GSXR750 rear shock (have not ridden yet so I can't give feedback on if it's a good choice)
Removed the ignition & Hotwired the bike for keyless running
Pirelli MT75s (ordered, have not arrived)
In the works:
Reshape the tail section (no details - I'll post up if I make it work and it looks good)
Fork oil swap to 20W to see if I can get away with not upgrading the springs
New paint scheme (black & yellow) |

| I actually dig My Sharona. It was a hit song when I was in grade school. Along with the Weird Al version. And yes, I listened to KROQ, but not "actively" until about 94. Usually it was KLOS, then Pirate Radio when that came out. |

Every time I need to order something even as inane as brake pads I get this glazed zombie stare. I could just see what would happen when I started wanting a big bore kit, new fuel injector, and $85 scooter tires.
I keep thinking about the other local track, the one that's more dangerous than the roads. But I may have to head back out to the scooter track one of these days, now that I have the CVT running at the right revs. I always forget about that track for some reason. .. |

The one where you high-sided the scooter?
And it's better to ask forgiveness than to ask permission. Though, that's harder in your situation since you need to enlist her help in buying used vehicles. |

Subject: She fired last night! |
|
Last night, being bored with nothing but crapola on the boob tube, I decided to go putin some more time on this baby. Next thing you know everything is back on except the tank and I'm just not able to resist trying to fire it up. Pop the tank on, splash in enough gas to cover the reserve straw and chugga chugga chugga VROOOM!!!!!
I know that Muzzy is a loud pipe, but this shorty on here sounds like the dogs of war, or the 4 horseman of the apocalypse. But it does sound dman good.
One thing I did discover is that the controls from an 04 DO NOT work on an 89. Before I got the chugga vroom, there was five minutes of "press start....nothing" It took me another 10 minutes to find the original pod. Guess I am going to swap out the harness like I was considering. |

Subject: More notes on the install |
|
| The only way I could get it in without uninstalling the front part of the rear fender was to slide it in from the back, over the rear tire and down into place. I also cut more of that fender off after the pic. The part that's hitting the air stem, so Icould access all the adjustable bits. All in, I cut out way less than the guy who did the original write up. |

Subject: Mine's just for regular track days |
|
| I don't really have an interest in racing. I just wanna go fast and push the limits in a safe environment. I already feel like I could ride my "regular" canyons quite a bit faster than I do, but it does not seem smart or safe. Plus, I want to do it without hurting my daily rider. |

Thanks, AJ, for the info about the difficulty of putting on the shock. I'll add that disclaimer to the FAQ, along with some of the photos.
Sounds like a lot of fun. There's something about a machine that's designed purposely to go fast and handle well that brings out the hooligan in all of us |

|
| Thanks! I'm going to run a K&N pod on it. The PO was running it with no filter. Plus, the fender chop to fit the piggyback shock requires airbox removal at the very least to get it installed. From looking at it, I could probably run a stock box if I wanted, but I don't. |

Subject: The track bike build continues |
|
Today I decided I need to put some time in on the angry hornet. So far, I've done the following:
Stripped the bike
Swapped the stator cover for one from an 06 (swapped right in - thanks Wes)
Cleaned the carbs
Flushed the tank
Swapped in a GSXR shock
installed my race exhaust
Fabbed (mostly) a new battery box bracket
For anyone debating about doing the GSXR (or similar piggyback shock) mod, don't do it. Unless you have a LOT of time or free access to a machine shop to do the requisite grinding and cutting to make it fit. I happen to have time and a decent amount of tools to choose from, so I did it. I have no idea how it will ride, but I'm hoping it will be nice. If not, I can always swap in my WP shock for track days. There's still a lot of work to do before I can even start the engine, but here are some pics:
