Subject: Two Weeks to the Pacific Coast Odyssey Ride (Aug. 26-Sept. 5)

This is a trip I've been planning for a bit and have reported it already. I'm reposting for the benefit of those who don't read older posts. Below is the itinerary for the trip. It's set, rain or shine, with campground reservations confirmed. I'll repost a couple more times between now and late August. Day trippers, joint venturers, section riders, or just folks who want to meet up are welcome. I've got a stout collection of folks who say they want to join in for parts of the ride or just meet up. PM me or email me if you want to ride or meet somewhere along the way.

Itinerary appears below the photo:

Except for occasional forays inland to explore local twisties, the route will be the coast highway all the way down and back. That's Highway 101 in places and Highway 1 in others.

Fri. 8/26: Portland to Astoria, camping at Ft. Stevens State Park.

Sat. 8/27: Astoria to Reedsport, camping at Umpqua Lighthouse State Park.

Sun. 8/28: Reedsport to Crescent City, camping at Jedediah Smith State Park/Redwoods National Park.

Mon. 8/29: Crescent City to Bodega Bay, camping at Sonoma Coast State Beach.

Tues. 8/30: Bodega Bay across the Golden Gate Bridge to San Luis Obispo, camping at Morro Bay State Park. Might have to run down toward Santa Barbara after setting up camp to meet a friend.

Wed. 8/31: San Luis Obispo to Big Sur (with detours into the backroads of San Luis Obispo County), camping at Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park.

Thurs. 9/1: Big Sur to Ft. Bragg, camping at MacKerricher State Park.

Fri. 9/2: Ft. Bragg to Arcata, camping at Redwoods National Park.

Sat. 9/3: Arcata to Bandon (with detours into the Redwoods and Siskiyou Mtns.), camping at Bullard's Beach State Park.

Sun. 9/4: Bandon to Tillamook, camping at Cape Lookout State Park.

Mon. 9/5: Tillamook to Portland.

That is an awesome trip. You will have to take lots of pictures and post an annotated report after you get back!!

Good luck,

Good god do I want to go. Gotta work, though. Also, I'm on the wrong coast. Maybe you'll go next year?

Things have come up to mess up my original plans to meet you for a bit, and/or to attend the Silver Creek Falls, meet.

I might be able to meet you around Arcata or between there and Bandon on your return trip.

Yesterday (8-13) I rode over to the coast on 199 and up 101 to Brookings. The roads in that stretch are in pretty good shape. Not sure if you know the local shortcuts, but one that saves you at least a few miles.

South of the California border turn left on 197. Its a nice road, good scenery, nothing real technical, a good "cooling off" ride. You will T-intersect with 199, turn left. Jedidiah Smith Redwoods SP is within a mile or two on the right. I would be at least legal in my speed around the park. On the way to the coast a CHP had some car pulled over with all the lights going. On the way back, the roadway was nearly abandoned.

When you are leaving, DO take 199 to where it joins 101...VERY twisty, very BIG trees, very wonderful scenery, just a beautiful ride in many ways. You won't be missing anything on 101 from the 197 turn-off and where 199 connects.
